SUWIC is one of the leading international research centres for the thermal treatment of wastes and biomass.
The centre has a worldwide reputation for innovative investigations into combustion, gasification and pyrolysis of biomass/waste and the associated electrical power generation systems.
The Centre specialises in several major areas of environmental concern, including waste management, flue gas clean up systems, recycle/ reuse of ash residuals and the eventual disposal of sludges.
In the relevant fields of waste and energy management for cities, SUWIC played a key role in developing one of the UK's first, and still the largest district heating system, with 150MWh currently connected. This is operated by Sheffield Heat & Power, using heat generated by burning domestic, commercial and hospital wastes.
SUWIC was also the major contributor to the successful University bid for the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Environmental Outreach in 2001.

EPSRC funded PRO-TEM Network

Funded by EPSRC Energy Programme, PROTEM Network aims to provide a forum which incorporates knowledge and experience from academia, industry, NGOs and other sector stakeholders. The network focuses on energy efficiency improvements opportunities in the process industry. The process industry is a substantial user of energy and whilst many process systems have been optimised in recent years, there is an opportunity to improve the efficient use of thermal energy in existing plant operation and the design of future plants.
